Winter fun day in Dexter last week-end a success

DEXTER - North Country Riding Club of Dexter, held their 2nd annual sleigh ride on Saturday, March 1st on the Crockett Road near Little Lake Wassookeag and at the same time, the Wassookeag Snowmobile Club hosted their 1st ever Ice Wars acrossed the road.

With the help of Hamilton Stables and the Thompson Farm, NCRC of Dexter provided Horse Drawn Sleigh Rides open to the public from 10-2. Children, adults and families enjoyed a beautiful winter day and welcomed over 100 friends, & families for the WSC Ice Wars and NCRC sleigh rides. Several local families attended and others drove from as far as Mount Vernon, Dover-Foxcroft, Corinna, Detroit, Vassalboro, Ripley, Newport, Bangor, Sangerville, St. Albans, Dixfield, Augusta, Hermon, Hampden, Skowhegan, East Corinth and Dexter to take part in the winter festivities.

The Horse Drawn sleigh rides wound through the pine fields at the Hamilton Stables/Thompson Farms, and the children had the opportunity to play in the snow covered fields, while parents looked on in amusement prior to their sleigh ride. Upon returning from their sleigh ride everyone was given the opportunity to visit with the large, white Percheron Geldings horses.

After enjoying a sleigh ride, many families walked down to Little Lake Wassokeag to watch the Ice Wars and have lunch from the food wagon. NCRC offered snacks, desserts, donuts, hot chocolate, & coffee. The Wassookeag Snowmobile Club chef, Frank Sprague offered a full lunch menu.

The Ice Wars track was 660 feet long and top speed was 117 mph. The beautiful day brought 31 drag racers from all over the area and the events lasted into late afternoon. All winners received a cash awards with "grudge matches" held at the end, much to enjoyment of spectators & racers. The family fun day in Dexter was a successful and rewarding day!
