CENTRAL MAINE - On September 14th, the T.R.O.T. Club (Trail Riders of Today) sponsored Trail Trials were held at the Archer residence in Troy, with 22 riders, 14 members and 8 nonmembers. The riders were judged based on their ability to negotiate 16 obstacles over a 1 1/2-mile course. The course was designed to encounter obstacles that could appear on a trail ride. Each obstacle was worth 10 points for a total of 160 points and included the following; (1a) Quick release knot, (1b) Mounting (mounting judged based on horses' willingness to stand still), (2) Maze; (3) Raingear; (4) Lumberyard; (5) Horse/cow in field; (6) Equipment; (7) 4-wheeler; (8) Downhill; (9) Waterhole; (10) Dirt bike; (11) Downed tree; (12) Lawn mower; (13) Dog kennel; (14) Bicycle and (15) Dismount/remount. A 5-mile pleasure ride was offered after the obstacles had been completed. Trophies were awarded for “High Point” and ribbons were presented for Reserve Champion and placement through 6th place. Junior winners were; (1) High Point Trophy - Abby Hill (146.5 points) riding Misty (2) Reserve Champion - Vanessa Keresey (136 points) riding Ella and 1st Place - Rikki Babcock (120.5 points) riding Spirit Racer. Senior winners were; (1) High Point Trophy - Rita Brooks (154 points) riding Navarna (2) Reserve Champion - Gini Ernst (153.5 points) riding Memories of Cheyenne (3) 1st Place - Sandi Oliver (151.5 points) riding Josh (3) 2nd Place - Linda Cameron-Davis (150 points) riding Pippin (4) 3rd Place - Marcia Meagher (147 points) riding Technical Knock Out (5) 4th Place - Charlotte Shaw (146.5 points) riding Miss Midnight Fire and Derek Creasy (146.5 points) riding Dusty (6) 5th Place - Sharon Kenney (141 points) riding Zephyr's Elegant Gift and Traci Tenggren (139.5 points) riding Nettie. Door prizes were donated from (a) Trail Riders of Today (various prizes) and (b) Stepping Stone Farm (50 lb. Grain). Door prizes were given out for (1) Oldest rider (Peter Anderson), (2) Youngest rider (Rikki Babcock), (3) Farthest traveled (David Long), (4) Oldest Horse (Derek Creasy), (5) Youngest horse (Susan Manson), (6) Novice Rider (Abby Hill), (7) Novice Horse (Katherine House), (8) Lowest Score Senior (Peter Anderson) and (9) Lowest Score Junior (Rikki Babcock). Names were drawn for the remaining door prizes. We would like to thank all of the judges for donating their time on a Sunday. Thank you to Carl & Linda Archer, Linda Maxwell, Brenda Keresey, Betty Davis, Jeff Manson, Paula Leavitt, Roy Brooks, Robert Day, Pam Logue, Tim Briggs, Amy Beem, Olivia Gauvin and Ellen Frappier. Also, thank you to Linda and Carl Archer for letting the club use their property for a day and a special thanks to Ian Mallory (4-wheeler operator), Mike Smith (dirt bike operator) and Laurie Gauvin (bicyclist). The day ended with everyone gathering for a potluck lunch and discussion of the day's activities. |
